My name is Nicky, and I am the only child of an Australian couple.
I was born and raised in Melbourne, and the first words that came to mind when I read my name was “Australian.”
But then I heard about the bands I liked from my school.
They were called the Kool Kids, and they were the group that started the modern rock revival.
I started to see the name on the posters of bands and on their records, and it stuck.
My parents’ names were also on the band posters and albums.
So when I was a teenager, I always imagined myself growing up to be Nicky and then I was like, “Oh my God.”
I remember looking around at my peers and being like, What are they thinking?
My parents were in their mid-60s, and my dad was also a journalist.
So I was pretty confused.
I’d always wanted to be a journalist, and being an Australian, I had a lot of questions.
The questions were like, Where are my parents from?
What do they think of Australia?
And then my friends were also really confused.
They didn’t really understand.
They had no idea what a band was.
I remember a group of kids who were my age who started playing the same guitar they used to play in their music videos, and were still doing that.
They would come up with a different song that they thought sounded great.
My friend and I were really fascinated by that, and we began to think about what a rock band was, and then we began writing songs about it.
We wrote songs like “I Don’t Know How to Love a Man” and “Love Me Harder.”
Then we just started putting the songs out in bands.
I think it started when we were in the second grade and we were at our school’s music class, and there was a group called the Rock Cats.
The kids were so excited to be playing music together, and when they were playing, they were dancing and singing.
So we put out “Rock Cats” and people liked it.
They just kept going.
And it just snowballed from there.
I have a friend who’s the singer of the band, and she was also in high school, and so she was a fan of “Rock Cat” as well.
I went to school with her, and now we’re really close friends.
We all know each other’s names and what we’re doing, and that’s what we’ve always been doing.
We’re just so excited about being a rock group.
When you go out and see the people that we know and love, you realize how lucky we are.
